Learn about chronic pain from Dr. DePopas, a diagnostic and interventional radiologist who is passionate about helping patients with pain.
I'm a practicing physician completing my final year of specialty training in Interventional Radiology (IR) at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. As an Interventional Radiologist, I specialize in solving medical problems through the use of image-guided procedures like epidural steroid injections for herniated discs, nerve ablations for chronically inflamed nerve roots, and image-guided fracture repair for patients in pain from fractured spinal bones. Although 6 years of my training has been devoted to performing state-of-the-art procedures, I believe the most important aspect of medicine is offering the best treatment to my patients, whether it is surgical or non-surgical. My goal is to treat and advise patients the same way that I would treat one of my family members. Communication, empathy, focusing on one's values, and continuous learning are the staples of my practice.
As a medical specialist, I find it disheartening how many patients our medical system fails. We have the best-trained doctors and care providers in the world yet only a fraction of the population has reliable access to these people. My passion is finding innovative ways for people with limited access to healthcare to get the same level of care the rest of society receives. In my career, I have found that patients with chronic pain have more trouble than most in receiving specialty level care, whether it is due to a physical limitation like the inability to drive to the doctor's office due to chronic lower back pain or lack of access to affordable health insurance because of unemployment due to debilitating pain. My goal is to help patients in pain get the best possible healthcare.
